Is blown-in insulation the fix for a hot upstairs?

Blown-in insulation is loose fiber blown through a hose and spread across your attic floor as evenly as we can get it, so the whole ceiling of your Tallahassee house is covered instead of just the easy spots near the hatch.

Most calls start the same way. The upstairs won't cool down, the room over the garage is worse, and the power bill keeps creeping up. Usually the attic floor is thin in spots and leaking air around the hatch and the lights, and more fill only helps once those gaps are closed, which is why attic air sealing comes first on our jobs. The price moves with the size of the attic, how much is already up there, how much sealing it needs and whether anything has to come out first. The schedule mostly turns on getting into the attic and, if you're using the city's grant, its paperwork. I come out, look at the space and go over what I found before you get a number.

How we do blown-in insulation

First I measure what's already in the attic, because that depth tells us how much to add. Then we close the gaps in the attic floor around the hatch, pipes, wires and light fixtures, since loose fill can't stop air that's blowing right through it. At the eaves we set baffles, short channels that hold the vents open, so the attic keeps breathing and the fill doesn't spill into the overhang. We keep insulation back from hot things like recessed lights, bare stove pipes and motors unless they're marked otherwise, because packing fill against them raises the risk of a failure or a fire. Then we blow the new layer in as even as we can get it, edge to edge, since a deep pile in the middle with a thin strip along the walls is the usual way this job goes wrong.

Blown-in is one piece of home insulation, and if the walls or the crawl space are your real trouble, I'll say so rather than sell you more attic fill. Back on the farm nobody put fresh hay on a wet floor, and it's the same idea here, so if I find a roof leak or a damp spot I'll show you before anything gets covered. Sometimes the old material has to come out first, which is insulation removal, and I'll tell you why if I think yours does.

Blown-in insulation in Tallahassee and the permit question

Who you check with about a permit depends on which side of the city line your house sits. Outside Tallahassee city limits, building permits go through the Leon County Development Services Department, and the Property Info Sheet from the county Property Appraiser shows your address as In or Out. Whether your particular job needs a permit is a question for the office that covers you, so we don't guess. We look up whether you're in or out, check with that office, and handle the permit paperwork when the job needs one.

Around Tallahassee we're in a lot of older ranch houses with low attics and recessed lights added over the years, and newer two-story homes where the room over the garage runs hot all summer. Long, humid summers are hard on a closed-up attic, so clear eave vents get the same attention on jobs in Bradfordville and Crawfordville.

Why call us for blown-in

  • I do the estimate myself

I come out, climb into your attic and write the estimate myself, then our own crew does the install. I check the work before we call it done, so the person who quoted your job is the one who signs off on it.

  • In business since 2017

I learned insulation on other people's crews and started this business in 2017. Most of what I picked up along the way is about prep, fixing what's under the insulation before it disappears from view.

  • Licensed, insured and guaranteed

We're licensed and insured. Satisfaction guaranteed on every job, and if something we did doesn't sit right with you, I want to hear about it while we're still there.

  • Materials the city grant covers

The city's grant covers blown fiberglass and loose-fill cellulose, not foam, batts, rockwool or radiant barrier. If you're applying, we stick to one of those two so the material choice doesn't cost you the grant.

Before you call (850) 222-9906 or send a request, check what heats your house and measure how deep your insulation is now, because those two answers tell us how much to add.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my attic needs more insulation?

If the insulation on your attic floor is less than about 6 to 7 inches deep, your house could benefit from more. Push a ruler down to the drywall in a few places, not just by the hatch, since the edges are usually thinner than the middle. I'll measure it again when I come out.

Will the City of Tallahassee help pay for blown-in insulation?

Yes, for qualified residential customers the city pays 80% of the installed cost, up to $400, and households that qualify based on income may get 100%, up to $500. The city pre-inspects every grant job along with an energy audit, so that visit goes on the calendar before we install. You apply through the City of Tallahassee ceiling insulation grant.

How deep should blown-in insulation be in Tallahassee?

For a house heated by a natural gas furnace, an oil furnace or an electric heat pump, the city's program calls for R38, which is about 15 inches of blown white fiberglass or about 10 1/2 inches of loose-fill cellulose. R-value rates how well insulation slows heat, and a central electric resistance furnace calls for R49, which means going deeper. Tell us what heats your house and we'll blow to the depth that matches it.

How much does blown-in insulation cost in Tallahassee?

You get a real number after I've looked at your attic in person, because what's already up there and how much sealing it needs change the job more than anything else. What you pay out of pocket can drop a lot if you qualify for the city grant above, but the grant doesn't cover removing old insulation, so any removal comes on top. Call (850) 222-9906 and I'll come take a look.

How do I find out who handles building permits for my address in Tallahassee?

Inside city limits, the City of Tallahassee Building Inspection Division answers questions about permit types at 850-891-7001, option 2, then option 1. Outside city limits it's the county office covered above. Either way, we check with the office that covers your address before we start.

How do I know how much insulation actually went into my attic?

Ask the installer for a written record of what went in. A federal weatherization checklist has installers fill out a certificate listing the insulation type, the area covered, the installed and settled thickness, the R-value and the number of bags, and you can ask for the same details. Ask us and we'll write down what went in when we're done.

  • Home insulation

If the attic isn't your only hot or drafty spot, this looks at the walls, floors and the rest of the house in one plan.

  • Insulation removal

When what's in the attic now has to come out before new fill goes in, this is that job.
