Should I add insulation on top of what's already in my attic?

Usually, yes. Retrofit insulation means adding to the insulation already in your attic instead of tearing it out, and in Tallahassee it's often the most sensible way to get the upstairs comfortable again. We spread the new layer evenly across the whole ceiling so there are no thin spots letting the heat through.

Most calls start the same way. The upstairs is hot by mid-afternoon, the room over the garage never feels right, and the power bill creeps up a little more every summer. Usually there's some insulation up there, just not enough, or it's settled thin where it matters. The price moves with the size of the attic, how many inches you already have, how many gaps need sealing, and whether any old material has to come out first, which turns it into an insulation removal job as well. The schedule mostly turns on whether something has to be fixed before we add anything. I look at the space in person and walk you through what I found before you get a number.

How we do retrofit insulation

First I go up and see what you've already got, how many inches and what shape it's in, because adding to good insulation is often a better deal than starting over. Next we do the air sealing, closing the gaps around can lights, pipes, wires and the attic hatch, so the new layer isn't fighting a draft coming up from the house. We put baffles at the eaves, short channels that hold the vents open, so the attic can still breathe and damp air doesn't settle into the framing. Then we blow in the new layer, loose fill sent up through a hose, and spread it evenly across the whole ceiling with the edges as deep as the middle, since thin edges are where most attics lose. I check the work before we call it done.

Foam is the other way to go. Spray foam insulation costs more but seals air while it insulates, and I'll point you toward it when your ductwork runs through the attic. For most houses, though, sealing the gaps and topping up loose fill gets you more for your money. If your attic is close to bare or the old stuff has to come out, that's a full attic insulation job rather than a top-up, and I'll tell you which one you've got.

Retrofit insulation in Tallahassee: permits and what we find up there

Inside the city limits, the city's Growth Management Department issues the permits for building, renovating or expanding a house. Whether adding insulation to your attic needs one isn't something I'll guess at from the driveway. We find out whether your address is inside the city limits or out, check with the office that covers it, and handle the permit paperwork when the job needs one.

Up in the attics around here we see a lot of the same things, insulation that's settled thin at the eaves and vents buried under whatever got blown in years ago, so we find those vents and clear them before anything new goes down. We run into the same attics on jobs in Bradfordville and Crawfordville, and we handle them the same way.

Why call us for retrofit insulation

  • I price it after I've seen it

I come out myself, look at the attic and write the estimate, then our own crew does the install. I check the work before we call it done, so the person who promised the job is the one who looks it over.

  • Fixing things since 2017

I grew up on a farm where if something broke, you fixed it, and I learned insulation on other people's crews before starting this business in 2017. Nine years in, I still look at what's underneath before we cover it up.

  • Licensed and insured for attic work

We're licensed and insured. That matters more than usual in an attic, where one wrong step off a joist puts a foot through your ceiling.

  • Grant jobs done in the right order

The city's ceiling insulation grant requires an energy audit before installation, so if you're using it, book the audit first. We set our install date after it, so the paperwork lines up.

The attic underneath has to be sound before anything goes on top of it. Call (850) 222-9906 or request an estimate and I'll come take a look.

Get your attic insulation checked before you buy any

We reply within one business day, and the estimate is free, done at your home and comes with no obligation. I'll come look at the attic myself and go over what I found before you get a number. It helps to tell us how the house is heated and whether you've noticed any roof leaks or old knob and tube wiring.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to add insulation to an existing attic in Tallahassee?

Across the US, adding insulation over existing attic insulation usually runs about $1 to $4 per square foot installed. That's a national figure, not a local price and not ours. Where your attic lands depends on its size, how much is already up there and how much sealing and repair it needs first, and you'll get your own number after I've seen it.

Does the City of Tallahassee help pay for attic insulation?

Yes. Through its ceiling insulation grant, the city pays most of the installed cost, up to $400, for qualified residential customers, and customers who qualify on income may get the whole cost covered, up to $500. The grant only covers blown fiberglass and loose-fill cellulose, it comes after the energy audit, and only contractors on the city's approved list can take part, so check that list before you hire anyone. The city also has a low-interest insulation loan if the grant doesn't stretch far enough.

How do I prepare my attic before adding insulation?

Get a leaking roof, live knob and tube wiring, old vermiculite insulation and any bathroom fans venting into the attic fixed first, because those have to be dealt with before new insulation goes in. Covering them up just hides the problem, and I'd rather tell you about it than sell you more material. If I find one, we plan the repair into your budget and schedule before we start.

Should I remove old attic insulation before adding new?

Usually not, because taking old insulation out adds a removal charge and dry insulation still does its job under the new layer. It comes out when it's been soaked or is full of droppings, since new material on top of that keeps the problem right where it is. I check what's up there before I suggest pulling anything.

How do I know if my attic needs more insulation?

Take a flashlight up and look at the ceiling joists, and if you can see their tops, there isn't much up there. Thin edges, bare patches near the hatch and an upstairs that stays hot after the AC has run all afternoon point the same way. If you'd rather not crawl around up there, that's what the estimate visit is for.

Is it worth adding wall insulation to an older house in Tallahassee?

Usually not. Florida's home energy guidance says that in most of the state, adding wall insulation to an existing home is rarely, if ever, cost effective, so the attic is almost always the better place for your money. If the upstairs is the problem, the ceiling is where I'd start.

  • Spray foam insulation

Worth a look if your air handler and ducts sit in the attic and you want them inside a sealed, insulated space.

  • Attic insulation

The right call when there's little left up there or the old layer has to come out before anything new goes in.
